BE SUNSMART- Slip Slop Slap Wrap

Skin cancer is the most preventable cancer in New Zealand, yet there are 50,000 new cases each year. One in three people raised in New Zealand will get some form of skin cancer in their lifetime.

New Zealand’s temperate climate and unpolluted skies along with the depletion of the ozone layer, exposes us to some of the highest levels of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) in the world. Our outdoor lifestyle puts us further at risk.  However, there are many easy ways to enjoy the outdoors while staying safe in the sun :
  • SLIP into a shirt - and slip into some shade, especially between 11am and 4pm when the ultraviolet rays are most fierce

  • SLOP on some sunscreen on any area of your skin not covered by clothes before going outdoors.  Use an SPF30+ broad-spectrum sunscreen

  • SLAP on a hat with a brim or a cap with flaps. More people get burned on the face and neck than any other part of the body, so a good hat is important

  • WRAP on a pair of close fitting, wrap-around glasses

Ultraviolet Index

Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) contributes to sunburn, eye damage, wrinkles, and skin cancer.   The level of UV in the atmosphere increases during the day, reaching its peak between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm.

The UVI (Ultraviolet Index)  which replaces 'Burntime', provides information on how to protect ourselves in the sun.   The index is an international scientific measure.
