Smokefree legislation
The amendment to the Smoke-free Environments Act 1990 has seen significant changes that have implications for all New Zealanders.
Approximately 75 percent of the adult population are Smokefree, and therefore, the new requirements provide further protection to non-smokers from second-hand smoke. The Act requires the following:
- All buildings and grounds of schools and early childhood centres to be Smokefree
- Licensed premises (bars, restaurants, cafes, sports clubs, casinos) to be smokefree indoors
- Workplaces including offices, factories, warehouses, work canteens and “smoko” rooms to be Smokefree
- The display of tobacco products in retail outlets is restricted. And “Smoking Kills” sign must be erected near the display
- Herbal smoking products are included in the smoking ban
- Under 18-year-olds are restricted from accessing smoking products
