BAN CIGARETTE DISPLAYS
Key opportunity to contribute to tobacco control policy development in New Zealand
The Ministry of Health released a consultation document on the future of tobacco displays on December 3rd (Submissions due February 15th). The document outlines three options for tackling this ongoing marketing practice.
The Cancer Society and ASH regard a complete ban on the retail display of tobacco products and associated imagery as the only acceptable option. It is the only option to protect children and support smokers to quit smoking.
We would like to ask you to support this important policy initiative by making a submission yourself.

Tobacco is responsible for around 4,700 deaths in New Zealand each year and contributes to one in four of all cancer deaths. By the year 2030 tobacco will be responsible for10 million deaths worldwide - that's more than HIV, tuberculosis, traffic accidents, suicide and homicide combined.
Smoking also causes cancer of the mouth, pharynx, larynx, oesophagus, pancreas and kidney, chronic respiratory diseases such as asthma, glue ear, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and blindness.
Smokers inhale more than 4000 chemicals including acetone (paint stripper), ammonia (toilet cleaner), cyanide (rat killer), DDT (insecticide) and carbon monoxide (car exhaust fumes).
Second-hand smoke causes around 350 deaths each year and is the leading environmental cause of death in New Zealand.
