Transport to treatment

If you are finding it difficult to get to and from treatment at any of our Auckland Hospitals or Domain Lodge,  due to the lack of availability of people within your support network,  the Cancer Society Volunteer Service is here to help.

The Society has over 400 volunteer drivers who provide a wonderful back-up driving service for patients to ensure hospital appointments are able to be kept.  However as this is a voluntary service it is important to consider the following information :

  • We require a minimum of 48 hours notice of any appointment that you may have.  However the earlier you contact us (say 5 days prior to the appointment)  the more opportunity we will have to assist you with your driving request.

  • We ask that your treatment appointment be no earlier than 9.30 am and no later than 2.30 pm to ensure our drivers are not caught up in rush hour traffic, thereby minimizing the number of patients we can help in any one day.  If asked, the Booking Clerk at the hospital concerned will often set up your appointment time to suit the needs of our volunteer drivers.

  • While we will endeavour to meet your request for a volunteer driver, as this is a voluntary service it may not always be possible to assist you.

Transport can either be requested by your Cancer Society Liaison Nurse, by the staff at your treatment centre or you can call us directly on telephone (09) 308 0496.
