Nursing

Our Liaison Nurses work in the community supporting people before, during and after treatment.

All Liaison Nursing Services are free of charge.

What help is available ?

An experienced nurse is available to visit people at home.

The nurse will listen to find out what support and practical help is needed.

Ongoing or regular visits and telephone contact can be offered.  If necessary the nurse can be in contact with other health professionals who are involved or may be able to suggest or refer to others, for example Cancer Society counsellors, volunteer drivers, private and public health services or government and support agencies.

The nurse can support people through treatment, helping with the management of symptoms and side-effects and making information about a specific cancer, treatment or test easier to understand.  Assistance with decision-making at various stages of diagnosis and treatment is offered.

Help may be needed to adjust to and manage the emotional impact of cancer on anyone involved or with talking to family members, children, colleagues or friends about cancer.

Please be aware the liaison nurses do not provide physical nursing care such as dressing of wounds or showering assistance.

How do I contact the nursing service ?

Referrals can be made by anyone but must be with the permission of the person being referred.

Following referral the nurse will phone to arrange a suitable time to visit.

Phone Support Services on (09) 308 0168  Monday to Friday (excluding Public Holidays) or ask to be referred by your doctor or any other person involved in your care.
