Read about this first in circumnavigating NZ by Jet Ski
Tuesday, 03 April 2007
On Sunday, 5 February 2006, Aucklander, Jeremy Burfoot - a 46 year old Qantas 747 Captain, accompanied by his friend, 31 year old, Brad Burton. - set off from the Loaded Hog at the Viaduct, Auckland in an attempt to be the first to circumnavigate the coastline of New Zealand by jetski.
Jeremy had had melanoma, and he saw in his journey the opportunity to promote the SunSmart message during the summer. The Cancer Society believed Jeremy's high profile adventure would enhance the extensive SunSmart work already undertaken throughout the country. He said "New Zealand's clear blue skies, its moderate climate and outdoor lifestyle all contribute to the high rates of melanoma in this country. We wanted to show people how to enjoy the outdoors safely and at the same time protect themselves from the dangers of ultraviolet radiation".
Well 23 days, 5,000km and 20 ports later, Jeremy and Brad on their Seadoos had achieved their dream! They had become the first to circumnavigate New Zealand by jetski. Now Jeremy has written a book which is not only a story of their ride but also includes points of interest on the geography and history of the coastline and amusing anecdotes along the way.
And in the words of Dame Catherine Tizard "I was thrilled to be part of the welcome home and, on the spot awarded them membership of my own personal order of 'Dedicated Nutters of NZ'. These are the amazing people I have met over the years who attempt impossible tasks .... It's a jolly good read".

In light of the recent media coverage over the access of women with early stage breast cancer to the drug Herceptin, the Cancer Society of New Zealand has released a statement on its position.
Chief Executive, Neil Chave says, "The Cancer Society supports the view that all New Zealanders should have access to the very best possible treatment available for this condition. The Cancer Society is pleased to acknowledge the progress of the drug approval process for Herceptin in New Zealand."

Cancer Scientists reach the Finals
Friday, 01 July 2005
Congratulations to Professor Bill Denny and Professor Bill Wilson from the Auckland Cancer Society Research Centre for becoming finalists in the Metro magazine's 'Smart Auckland' competition. One panellist in the selection process pointed out that what they were looking for were researchers who had an impact beyond the lab bench; had established commercial vehicles to take their treatments to trial and hopefully into the hands of patients; and, summed it up by saying, "I'm interested in the ability to turn an idea into something that benefits society".
