The Auckland Cancer Society was formed in 1929 as a division of the New Zealand branch of the British Empire Cancer Campaign Society.
From humble beginnings as a Consultation Clinic, we have grown into a strong organisation and for over 75 years have provided a full range of support services to people with cancer and their families, in Auckland and Northland.
We also have a unique relationship with an internationally recognized cancer research centre, aptly named the Auckland Cancer Society Research Centre which is an integral part of the Society. We take great pride in the fact that it is the only Research Centre which has developed and brought an anti-cancer drug (Amsacrine) into clinical use in the Southern hemisphere.
As approximately 80% of cancers are due to lifestyle and environmental factors we are taking a lead in cancer prevention through our programmes SunSmart, Smokefree and LiveSmart
We rely solely on bequests and fundraising in the Auckland and Northland regions for our income. We do not accept direct Government funding as we do not wish to be compromised in any advocacy or lobbying we undertake on behalf of cancer patients and their families.
Our Vision
Our vision is to be the pre-eminent cancer organization in New Zealand with an enviable reputation for excellence in care and support for people affected by cancer, providing the best possible information about cancer, cancer prevention and early detection, and in cancer research.
